ARE ELITE ATHLETES ROLE MODELS FOR ONE LIVING IN DEVELOPING NATIONS ?

From the beginning of time, man has looked outside of himself for examples of strength , leadership, and guidance. Perhaps it is an acknowledgement of a human defect. Even the mythological gods possessed powers beyond those of simple men . Legends and stories  tell of men with superhuman strength, endurance and wisdom .So why would it not seem natural for that same kind of idolatry to be transferred to other human beings with great physical performances ????

Idolizing may be a sign of human defect, but it is natural for someone to see a character performing extraordinary feats and pretend, even for the slightest moment, that they themselves have that kind of power. This is the reason why people from our civilization is so attracted to sports figures, because we see people who are mortal and similar to us do things with their body that we cannot do or we have not seen before.

Children look up to these sports figures as "idols" who are invincible. And because so many people get emotionally involved while watching sports and become so involved in the game, sports consequently holds a great importance to them in our lives.Various commercials, movies and promotional ads place these sports figures on their front page such that public always gets keen to try their product. With the media's sketch and athletes's advertising appeal , sports play an exalted role in our lives.

Micheal Jordan is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern basketball and has gone down in the history as one of the greatest men ever to step on the court and destroy the colour barrier existing in the society. Another man is Ronaldinho, who is an idol to not only millions of Brazilian and football fans but to others around the world too.'Master blaster' Sachin Tendulkar has also set an example in the world that if your spirits are high and if you toil hard then your physicality or height does not create barrier between you and success .

But by no means is anyone perfect . Even the elite athletes or even our fictional characters fail sometimes no matter how great they are . The thing that we must not forget is that they were not born perfect their hard work and dedication made them perfect. Therefore, sports figures are definitely role models for the one living in developing and developed nation  BUT BUT BUT , we must remember that not all are necessarily good ones .
